Destination Weddings More Popular Than Ever

In fact, according to The Knot Market Intelligence Destination Weddings Study, one in four couples are now choosing to say I do with a destination wedding. 2011 saw 350,000 destination weddings take place, cornering 24 per cent of all wedding ceremonies, an increase of four per cent from 2009.

The study also found that the number of guests attending destination weddings was up from 77 in 2009 to 86 in 2012. Surprisingly, the study also discovered that 86 per cent of bride and grooms still chose to honeymoon after their wedding with 70 per cent honeymooning in their wedding desintation.

According to Carley Roney, co-founder of XO Group Inc, the parent company of TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, The idea of having a destination wedding is growing among brides, and it goes hand in hand with the fact that most people no longer live where they grew up. When family is spread all over the country, a destination wedding is the perfect way to bring everyone together, she said.

The results of the survey revealed that 66 per cent of international brides and 45 per cent of domestic brides were seeking special, fun or exotic destinations for their weddings. However 65 per cent of the brides surveyed also admitted to trying to create a more intimate affair with fewer guests'.
