A walk on Hamilton Island can take you from the resort area into native bushland, onto a quiet beach or up to a lookout above the Whitsundays. It's a chance to explore the island's natural landscape and enjoy places you can only reach on foot.
Choose a shorter outing to Hideaway Bay or Flat Top Hill, climb the steps to Passage Peak, or allow more time for the coastal scenery at South East Head. The trails vary in length, but even the shorter walks involve uneven ground and some uphill effort.
Use the guide below to compare walking times. These are approximate return times using the same route. Allow extra time for photos, picnics and rest breaks.

These are bushwalks rather than paved sightseeing paths so choose a route that suits your fitness, the weather and the time available.
Hideaway Bay is a good choice if you'd like a shorter bushwalk with a coastal destination.
Begin at the Scenic Trail entrance and follow the signs towards the bay. The track passes through bushland and includes rocky, uneven sections, so wear enclosed walking shoes.
At the shoreline, take a break and enjoy views towards Whitsunday Island before retracing your steps. Allow around an hour for the return walk, plus any time you spend at the bay.
Flat Top Hill offers a shorter lookout walk, with views across the northern and southern sides of Hamilton Island.
Start at the Resort Lookout Trail entrance and continue to Resort Lookout Junction. Follow the trail towards Saddle Junction for approximately 100 metres, then take the turn onto the Flat Top Hill trail.
There's uphill walking along the way, followed by a viewing area where you can pause before returning. Allow around an hour in total.
The walk to Resort Lookout takes you uphill through Whitsunday bushland to a viewpoint over the island's developed areas.
Begin at the Resort Lookout Trail entrance near the eastern end of the Conference Centre. Allow approximately 45 minutes to reach the lookout, with time to rest before the return journey.
From the top, you can pick out the resort buildings, Marina Village and airport. It's a rewarding option if you'd like an elevated view without committing to a longer trail.
Middle Head is worth considering if you're more interested in native bushland than a broad, open lookout.
From the Scenic Trail entrance, follow the network through Saddle Junction towards Turkey Nest Junction, where the Middle Head trail branches off. The route continues through native trees and shrubs to a hilltop.
Views towards the southern waters and Whitsunday islands appear through gaps in the vegetation. Allow around two hours for the return walk from the Scenic Trail entrance, with extra time to pause along the way.
Passage Peak is a good choice for walkers looking for a more demanding climb and a wide-reaching view.
Starting at the Scenic Trail entrance, follow the route through Saddle Junction towards the summit. Expect uphill sections and numerous steps, with a particularly steep final climb.
Allow around an hour each way, plus time at the top. Hamilton Island's highest point offers a panorama across the surrounding islands and sea, making the summit a natural place for a well-earned break.
The Coral Cove walk suits visitors who like a beach stop as part of their outing.
From the Scenic Trail entrance, follow the route through Saddle Junction towards the cove. The trail winds through native bushland, with uneven terrain and changes in elevation along the way.
Allow approximately an hour each way. Once you reach the beach, there are picnic tables and a giant wooden swing overlooking the water. Factor in time to enjoy the stop before starting your return walk.
Escape Beach is another option for combining a bushwalk with time by the coast.
Start at the Scenic Trail entrance and continue through Saddle Junction, following signs towards Escape Beach. Allow around an hour each way for the direct route.
The walk finishes at a sandy cove framed by large rocky outcrops, with a wooden hammock overlooking the shore. Bring a snack or picnic and leave room in your schedule for a break at the beach.
Connecting trails offer longer routes through the island's south-east.
South East Head is one of the longer outings in this guide, taking walkers towards the island's rugged coastal edge.
Follow the route from the Scenic Trail entrance via Saddle Junction. Bushland gives way to exposed rock formations and coastal views, with a giant wooden chair marking a memorable stopping point.
Allow approximately three hours for the direct return walk, plus breaks. The route includes exposed sections and uneven ground, so take plenty of water and leave enough daylight for the journey back.
Two main access points serve the walks in this guide: the Scenic Trail entrance near the eastern end of Catseye Beach, and the Resort Lookout Trail entrance near the Conference Centre.
Saddle Junction connects several routes, including those towards Passage Peak, Coral Cove, Escape Beach, Middle Head and South East Head. It's useful for planning your walk, but you don't need to treat it as a separate sightseeing stop.
Carry the current Hamilton Island Walking Trail Map, and follow trail signs. If you combine destinations, check the full route rather than adding together the return times listed above.
Wear sturdy, enclosed shoes with good grip and carry plenty of drinking water. Bring sun protection, snacks and a charged phone, and check weather conditions before leaving.
The trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Plan to return before dark, stay on marked tracks and let someone know your route and expected return time. Mobile reception is limited in some areas, and there are no toilets on the trails.
Take all rubbish with you and give wildlife space. If your walk includes a beach stop, follow current marine stinger advice and avoid swimming at secluded beaches.
