Potential luxury resort, but falls short

Iririki Island Resort has a magnificent setting on its own private island, surrounded by water, with a beautiful pool and good facilities. However, there are several significant shortcomings which, in my experience, prevent it from being a true luxury resort.

1) No room service
There is no room service available at all, which is unexpected for a resort positioning itself as 4-5 star.

2) Long, uncomfortable walk to breakfast in heat
Depending on where you are located, getting to breakfast can require a 10-15 minute walk up and down hills in full sun, heat and humidity. We stayed in a Deluxe Family Pool Studio, which was close to the pools, yet every morning we worked up a sweat walking to breakfast in the heat and humidity. By the time you arrive, you are already hot and uncomfortable. Then there is no air-conditioning at breakfast, only fans. The resort is not suitable for guests with mobility issues, families with young children, or those who do not like walking in the direct sun for basic needs like meals.

3) No pool towels at pool areas
There are no towels available at the pool areas. Guests are expected to bring towels from their room or walk to reception to collect them, which can be a 10-minute walk in the heat. There was also a notice advising that lost pool towels would incur a $35 AUD charge, effectively forcing guests to reuse towels. This does not align with expectations of a luxury or even upper mid-range resort.

4) Limited bottled water
The resort provides one bottled water per person on arrival and there was a notice advising guests to refill the bottle with tap water or boiled water. Given that Vanuatu is a developing country and drinking tap water is not generally recommended for Australians, this felt like the resort cutting corners on basic comforts such as bottled water.

5) Very limited food options
The menu consists almost entirely of Australian pub-style food—pizza, burgers, and chips. This is not food I personally want me or my children to be eating every day on holiday, and was no local cuisine was offered on the standard menu disappointingly. The only exception was one night featuring a local buffet, priced at around $70 AUD per adult (less for children). This is poor value for families, as children rarely eat enough to justify the cost. As a result, we left the resort to eat in town for more food variety and better value food. By the time you walk to the jetty, take the ferry, and walk through town, it takes 20-30 minutes just to get food—hardly convenient or "resort-style" holidaying.

6) Kids club communication issues
While the kids club staff were lovely, staff at the "guest experience desk" were unable to tell families what activities would be offered the following day, making it difficult to plan. When I suggested providing a schedule, even with a disclaimer that activities are weather-dependent, I was told they do not share the kids club activity schedule prior to the actual day at all due to changing weather. This is very inconvenient for families trying to plan their day in advanced, especially considering the amount of trekking we need to do to get around the island.

Whilst staff were very friendly, and the setting was truly magnificent, I am providing this feedback to explain why I do not believe Iririki Island Resort currently meets 4-5 star standards. The overall customer experience on the island is often not comfortable or convenient.

Additionally, despite very low local wages (we were told by a taxi driver that average wages are around 300 vatu per hour which is $5 AUD per hour), the resort charges prices comparable to, or higher than Australia for food and drinks. In contrast, holidaying in many parts of Asia would be significantly cheaper for food, transport, and drinks. Plus Asian style resorts always provide air-conditioning and shelter for guests so they don't need to walk in the full on sun or heat. Given the prices charged in AUD and the exchange rate advantage, guests reasonably expect a more seamless and genuinely luxury resort experience.

With improvements to service, comfort, and customer experience, this resort has the potential to reach a true 4-5 star standard, but it does not meet that benchmark in its current form.
