Kamala is a small, beautiful and serene beach and we think it's perfect if you are looking for a relaxed and laid back beach holiday. The beach is a top spot for the awesome sunsets. We had a few nights sitting out at the front of the Sunprime Resort with a Gin fizz or two.
Kamala is about 15 minutes drive north of Patong, if you like that sort of thing but it's a great place if you are wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of that. It's a small village and the people reflect that. The southern end of the bay has a coral reef just a few metres offshore good for snorkelling. It's not over-developed yet, although there are some guesthouses and a few resorts. The northern end of Kamala Beach is perfect for swimming although the middle is packed with umbrellas and deckchairs which you can hire reasonably priced. Our favourite spot was there, where we got on with a local crew of fruit smoothie sellers, who I called The Beach boys. Had a few pineapple smoothies with vodka there as well. Also the prawn cakes were pretty darn good too.
7/11 is close by and there's a Big C and a Villa Market not far away.
There's a great selection of Thai restaurants around, a fantastic night market next to the Sunprime Resort and lots of noodle shops with a few western restaurants in the area. The locals are mostly ethnic Malay and there are some good local restaurants serving tasty Muslim food. The only difference I found in that was that you couldn't get pork at some roadside food vendors. We stayed there at low season, so there were not a lot of people, around which made it bearable for me. I know, I'm getting old and cranky.
All in all a top spot.
If you are staying at Sunprime see if you can get one of the beach view rooms. We were on the 3rd floor which had a look out over the gardens and a partial view of the ocean. Also, if you can, get to breakfast reasonably early, it gets a bit boisterous after 9am.
It was so good that we have booked to go there again next April!

Outstanding service, utmost attention to details in dining room, best buffet breakfast we have ever had in any of the many resorts we stayed at. Unexpected birthday surprise, presented by staff on evening dinner. Can only recommend at highest level.
