A must-see experience for any visitor lucky enough to be holidaying in mid-January, the Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival is the most famous local festival offering an incredible cultural experience. Held annually on January 15th, fire erupts into the night sky in a specially designated section of the village. Thousands of people gather to celebrate and pray for the good fortune and wellbeing of the village and for a plentiful harvest.
Also known as the Dosojin festival, it is one of the three most-celebrated Japanese fire festivals. The festivities culminate with torch-bearing villages who ‘battle’ young men who are barricaded in wooden forts which are pre-built, aiming to burn them down. Beginning early in the evening, the festival rages through the night with food, fire, good cheer and Japanese sake. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and should not be missed!
