Located in the town of Newman in Western Australia, Newman Airport is just 10km southeast of the city centre and is the primary transport option between Newman and the state capital of Perth. The majority of air traffic to Newman is comprised of light aircraft and commercial aircraft.
Major Australian airlines such as Qantas and its subsidiary QantasLink, Skywest and Virgin Australia all offer regular flights to Perth while chartered light aircraft service outer communities, other Pilbara towns and Port Headland. The Newman Airport tarmac supports Boeing 737-800 and 717 aircraft with a total capacity for four aircraft. Flights from Newman to Perth take approximately one hour and 45 minutes when flying on a jet aircraft.
The Newman Airport was once famously home to an annual drag racing event that took part on the airport's runway during Fortescue Festival. Known as the Newman Outback Drags, this annual novelty event was held in August and gave anyone over the age of 18 years with a street legal vehicle the opportunity to drag race opponents on the Newman Airport runway. However, as traffic to the Newman Airport increased, so too did the demand on the runway and the event was subsequently cancelled. Organisers are still currently looking for an alternative venue for the event.
