Victoria High Country Travel Guide

Known as the High Country, the alpine region northeast of Melbourne is a scenic part of Victoria and home to major winter sports. Located 375km northeast of Melbourne, Falls Creek is situated east of Bright with access via Mount Beauty. The alpine region also encompasses Wangaratta, Rutherglen, Milawa, Nagambie and Mansfield. With slopes of up to 1800m, the ski resorts of Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham offer excellent snowboarding and downhill skiing. The second largest winter resort, Falls Creek is renowned as Victoria's best skiing region. Home to 18 triple and quad chairlifts, the village is home to a number of shops and accommodation options. Ski season begins in June and generally runs until early October but this can depend on the conditions.

The big resorts also use snow machines overnight to make up for any light snowfalls and these areas are always busy when the northern hemisphere's ski fields are closed for the summer.

Falls Creek Attractions

Falls Creek is 375km northeast of Melbourne and is known as the best skiing region in Victoria with 18 triple and quad chairlifts. Nearby Mount Hotham is the fastest growing ski resort in Victoria and covers 245 hectares. The smaller region of Mount Buffalo is 330km northeast of Melbourne and is a major cross-country skiing destination. Mount Baw Baw is two and a half hours east of Melbourne and offers 37 hectares of 25 downhill ski trails.


Getting to the High Country

Getting to Falls Creek and High Country is an easy and scenic drive approximately 3 to 4 hours northeast of Melbourne. This stunning alpine region is also accessible from Sydney, with both routes travelling along the Hume Highway and passing through Albury Wodonga, Wangaratta, Glenrowan and Benalla. If you’re heading to Mount Buffalo, take the Hume Freeway to Wangaratta and travel along the Great Alpine Road through Ovens Valley and across the Great Diving Range. Turn off for Mount Buffalo just before Bright. If you’re headed for Falls Creek, take the turn off after Bright along the Kiewa Valley Highway and stay on the Great Alpine Road. This will also get you to Mount Hotham. If you’re travelling to Moutn Buller or Mansfield, take the Maroondah Highway. In terms of public transport there are a number of train services from Melbourne to Albury via Benalla and Wangaratta as well as a variety of coach services into the region.
