Tiwi Aboriginal Cultural Experience Tour

Offering a fascinating insight into the culture and lifestyle of the Tiwi people, the Tiwi Aboriginal Cultural Experience day tour begins with a 30 minute scenic flight to Bathurst Island where you'll be met by a local guide and taken through the modern Aboriginal community of Nguiu. You'll then visit the museum's traditional art displays and Tiwi dreamtime lore as well as the unique Tiwi style Catholic Church of the Early Mission Precinct. It's then on to the art and craft centre to see local artists at work as well as the opportunity to purchase souvenirs, crafts and fabric. Morning tea of damper and billy tea is then served in the company of Tiwi ladies as they weave, paint, demonstrate totem dances and perform a sacred smoking ceremony. You'll also learn some of the many meanings and complex rituals behind this culture including the Pukamani (burial ceremony). Continue on with a scenic drive through the island's wilderness before stopping for lunch at a local watering hole. You'll also learn about natural fibres and dyes, bush tucker and bush medicine before the return flight to Darwin.

Please Note: This tour does not include your flight from Darwin to Tiwi Islands. Tiwi Island return flights must also be purchased.
