How To Get To Hawkes Bay

Located on the North Island of New Zealand, Hawkes Bay is a region on the east coast known for its main city Napier. Situated mid-way between Auckland and Wellington, Napier is famous for its Art Deco architecture and features the world’s largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in an inner-city.

Getting to Napier from Australia is easy thanks to a number of Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia direct daily flights. Departing Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns, Gold Coast and Perth, these flights to Wellington take between 3 to 10 hours, depending on where you depart from and whether or not they are direct.

If you’re wondering how to get to Hawke’s Bay from Wellington, be prepared for a 4 hour drive north along State Highway 50. This is a great opportunity to take in some of the region’s gorgeous scenery along the way. However if you don’t have time to spare, Air New Zealand also offers a number of domestic flights from Wellington to the Hawkes Bay Airport. Located just north of the main downtown area, the Hawke’s Bay Airport is just a 10 minute drive from the main town of Napier.

Getting to Napier from a number of other popular North Island destinations is easy thanks to the location of State Highway 2, which passes just outside the downtown district, through the centre of Napier. Connecting the town to a number of other popular destinations, Rotorua is just over 2 and a half hours from Napier. For international visitors arriving in Auckland, you can enjoy a scenic drive through Hamilton on your way to Napier along the Thermal Explorer Highway taking a little over 5 hours.

There are also many cruises which depart Australia and visit Napier on a number of reputable cruise lines including Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises. Departing Brisbane and Sydney, these cruises are available on board the Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, Sun Princess and Pacific Pearl cruise ships.
