Getting To Heron Island
Located on the Great Barrier Reef 72km off the coast of Queensland, Heron Island is a spectacular coral cay renowned for it's breathtaking scenery and eco-experiences. Popular with travellers from across the globe, Heron Island's idyllic evergreen landscapes and bright blue waters make it the perfect destination for exploring the magnificent reef systems. Set in a remote location, getting to Heron Island takes a little bit of planning... but it's oh so worth it! Read on to discover the range of transport options for getting to Heron Island.
Regular flights are available from all major Australian cities to Gladstone with Qantas and Virgin Australia. Gladstone is a 1 hour and 20 minute flight or 6 hour drive from Brisbane.
Upon arrival in Gladstone, there are 2 options for getting to Heron Island
Launch Transfers
Note: Launch service operates every day except Tuesday, Thursday & Christmas Day.
Arrival: Flights into Gladstone must arrive no later than 8.00am. A coach (additional cost) departs Gladstone Airport on selected days at approximately 8.00am to connect with the launch. Guests making their own way to Gladstone Marina, can check in for the boat from 7.45am. The launch departs Gladstone Marina at 9.30am on selected days and arrives at Heron Island at approximately 11.45am.
Departure: Launch transfers depart Heron Island at 12.45pm and arrival into Gladstone is approximately 3.45pm. Same day connecting flights must depart from 4.45pm or later.
To fully confirm launch transfers, arrival and departure details for Gladstone must be advised.

Car lock up facilities at Gladstone Marina: Security car lock up facilities are available at Gladstone Marina. Please see Voyages staff at the marina on arrival.
Helicopter Transfers
Start your magical Heron Island holiday with a Marine Helicopter charter from Gladstone Airport to Heron Island. The 30 minute flight travels over Facing Island and Curtis Island before you see the surrounding reef and the marine life.
Important Note: Marine Helicopter Charter operates the scenic transfers daily, subject to weather constraints. The Check In Lounge is located next to the baggage carousel at Gladstone Airport. Please allow 60 minutes for check-in procedures.
Baggage Allowance: Please note a luggage restriction of 15kg per person (soft suitcases or bags preferred) including hand luggage. Extra baggage can be taken on the launch transfer and will arrive later in the day (please keep this information in mind as your luggage may not arrive in time for your outgoing flight). Tips for travelling to Heron Island
- Check in time is 3.00pm. If you are arriving before 3.00pm, we recommend carrying a 'day bag' with swimming costumes etc. Change rooms and shower facilities are available in the Departure Lounge- Reception Hours 8.30am - 7.00pm
- Credit card details will be required on arrival to set up room charge accounts. All major cards accepted.
- Complimentary guest laundry and ironing boards (powder can be purchased from the resort shop)
- If scuba diving is on your agenda, please bring along a medical certificate, or if more advanced proof of diving certification is strongly recommended.
